HISTORY

We know where we are going because we know where we are coming from.
We are delighted to share this experience with you.

CUGÓ GRAN

ORIGIN

Our history runs deep and resonates through centuries of heritage. It all started in the year 1816, when an important aristocratic family from Ciutadella moved closer to the city of Mahón in order to seek refuge from the rapidly spreading Black Death. Their new home had all the classic architectural features of a traditional country house, with stunning features such as weathered terracotta tiles, arched porches and porthole windows. The house is set in 100 hectares of land, standing high with a beautiful façade that faces south and overlooks glorious countryside and sweeping views of the Mediterranean. The name of the property was Cugó, a name that has now spread its wings and left the shores of Menorca to set an exciting new trend and evolve thanks to Cugó Gran Collection.

CUGÓ GRAN

PROCESS

Cugó Gran Menorca was the first boutique hotel in our Cugó Gran portfolio, opening in 2015 after a lengthy reconstruction process by the Von der Heyden group. The house and surrounding buildings were lovingly restored after years of neglect, achieving a perfect blend between tradition and modernity to provide guests the optimum luxury experience in the beautiful Balearic Islands. Cugó Gran Menorca has since become one of the top venues in the area and was approved as both a 5 star venue and a 5 star wedding venue. Ranked number 1 on Tripadvisor in 2020, Cugó Gran Menorca has also scored as a Traveller’s Choice Award property.

CUGÓ GRAN MACINA GRAND HARBOUR HOTEL

FURTHER DEVELOPMENT

Constructed by the Order of Saint John in 1554, the Macina formed part of a bastion which was designed to protect Senglea from invaders. As an iconic landmark in the city, the Cugó Gran Macina Grand Harbour is truly a hotel with a difference. Opened after major refurbishment in 2018, its historical fortress walls contrast with modern interior design and bespoke luxury fittings, looking out across the magnificent harbour to Vittoriosa and Cospicua.

PROCESS

Guests can now indulge themselves here in the safe knowledge that Malta enjoys an average of 300 days of sunshine a year, where they can stay in a luxurious setting that is steeped in history with fantastic views over both the city of Valletta and the harbour. We pride ourselves in this destination, one that offers exceptional location and heritage in this small but very special archipelago.
